With the help of the latest techniques like drones and the storage of biometric data, Europe is busy erecting a huge virtual wall against the influx of ‘irregular’ migrants. A network of surveillance technologies that are keeping an eye on all of us and who divide the world into people who can move freely about this planet and who may not. This billion dollars industry feeds on fear of migrants and on migration control.

Original title: Het veiligheidscomplex
The dramas with captured boats around the Italian island of Lampedusa, where many refugees drowned, have been used by European politicians to further expand the control device. We are building a huge database that stores all data from all travelers traveling through the Schengen area. By analyzing all these data, we can build risk profiles so that we can all be neatly filtered at the border. Are you green, orange or red, are you suspicious or have nothing to hide? And when do you have nothing to hide? The establishment of this system has grown into a billion dollars industry that lives its own life. The illegal immigrant rhetoric provides the money in order to perfect the security complex.

Backlight’s director Shuchen Tan visited the headquarters of the European border control agency Frontex and the European border patrol in southern Italy, and was at the launch of a new European research program at the great police and defense fair Milipol in Paris.

With: French lawyer Claire Rodier, biometric specialist Max Snijder, activist researcher Ben Hayes and science philosopher Huub Dijstelbloem.
