As a nation is born, the people of South Sudan have gathered on the streets to celebrate. “This is a historical time” says one, amid the crowd’s chants “we are free, we are free.” Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir offers the new country support in a surprise appearance, while a general of the south Sudanese People’s Liberation Army stands his ground over recent border disputes. “We will not leave that land to them. It is ours so it could be another war.” This report captures the mood of a newly independent state, and looks ahead to the future of this conflict-ravaged but oil-rich land.
