Papa Francisco has picked up speed on behalf of the Pope: She is the best-equipped hospital ship in the entire Brazilian Amazon region. Along the largest river in the world, it will serve over 1000 remote communities. Where no medical aid has been given so far.

The demand is enormous: many river dwellers need a whole day by boat to get to the next doctor or a simple hospital in the city. There they often have to wait days for treatment.
Up to 700,000 people are now to be reached by Pope Francis in the north Brazilian state of Pará. In an area larger than Germany. The bishop of Óbidos, Johannes Bahlmann, a German Franciscan, co-developed and promoted the idea of the ship hospital.
The Brazilian Franciscans of Divine Providence then had the ship built. Meanwhile the hospital ship with the motto healing and proclamation is on its way on the Amazon.
Deutsche Welle was exclusively present during the first voyage.
