Israel and Palestine, 1994
A historic report filmed during the proposed Norweigan Middle East peace plan.
PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres chat and joke over an informal lunch in the Gaza strip -such a meeting seems unlikely, but this is no ordinary lunch. It is hosted by the remarkable Norwegian Terje Larsen, known by many in the Middle East as ‘Mr Peace’. This narrative story follows the planning of ‘Larsen’s Lunch’ as organisers ensure neither side will face danger or insult. While their leaders arrive by helicopter and limousine, Palestinian and Israeli security forces eye each other across a dusty street. For Larsen they work together to protect ‘all’ the important guests. Both Larsen and his diplomat wife Mona Juul played a significant role in the Middle East peace process. Their relaxed style is a breath of fresh air although somewhat unorthodox. Larsen even persuades Arafat and Peres to pose for photographs with Palestinian waiters. This feature offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Larsen way to peace.
