Known as the moment Canada came of age as a nation, the Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the greatest achievements in Canadian military history.
On 8 April, 1917, 100,000 Canadian soldiers launched an attack on Vimy’s German fortifications, defences which had withstood three years of British and French assaults and had already cost the lives of 160,000 Allied and 10,000 German troops. To the shock and surprise of the world stage, the Canadians seized the ridge in one of the First World War’s most successful and brilliantly planned offensives.
