LA loses its lustre in the second of a two-part documentary. Crime author Martina Cole peels away the city’s veneer of glitz and glamour, exposing, in her own words, “the gang heartland of the USA”. The novelist is no stranger to the gritty and grim, having spent her life on “some of London’s toughest streets”. Indeed, her bestsellers are set in the East End’s criminal underworld, brutal tales that are soaked in violence .Well-versed as Martina is, LA’s underbelly is a wake-up call: “There are an estimated 1,100 gangs in LA. They’re organised and widespread, with a rap sheet from drug dealing and auto theft, to robbery and murder. There’s three firearm-related deaths everyday.” The gutsy lady focuses on the role of girls in these gangs, gaining access to current and former members. What is the appeal of the gangster’s life? How are these young women treated by their male counterparts? And are they seeking a way out?
