Megacities with no historical precedent or predecessor are being created in China. As a reaction to mass migration from the countryside to the cities, gigantic superstructures are being built that surpass the volume and height of any buildings in Europe or the US. They also possess forms and functions that have never existed before. The documentary showcases eight projects, in the cities Chongqing, Behai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and Wuhan.

However, this new architecture is often chaotic. In an attempt to provide living space for the rapidly growing population, it ignores China’s history and traditions. City planners, architects and designers are overwhelmed and lag behind. With modern museums and “neighbourly” skyscrapers, some try to give the anonymous structures a sense of identity and culture.
