The French economist Thomas Piketty and the Canadian activist and writer Naomi Klein are intellectual stars who are conquering the world with their ideas. They’re inspiring and mobilizing millions of people, not only because they identify major problems and solutions in their books, but also because they are permanently traveling the world, lobbying politicians and giving hundreds of television interviews, which are shared countless times on social media. Politicians often seems powerless, but famous intellectuals like Piketty and Klein revive the hope that we can actually tackle big problems. Is it just hope,or can they really change things? What’s the influence of these intellectual stars? Can they get the world moving, where politics has come to a standstill? VPRO Backlight followed them during their book tour.
